We've gone through 2 in ears, 1 on ears, and a pair of earbuds in coming up to this. My favorite under $30 headphones are the Sennheiser CX200s. At $13.99, it is my thought that these represent the best cost to performance rating of any headphones I own regardless of price. Now let's get started with this review.
The Sennheiser CX200s are a pair of in ear headphones. They come with 3 pairs of tips: small, medium, and large as is standard with most in ear headphones. As with all in ear headphones, fit is a big point of importance. In this department, I have to say that the CX200s are a bit hard to put in. However, they fit well and quite snugly when they are put in. After you get them in, these are actually incredibly comfortable so although I gripe about putting them in, they're really not that bad. But enough about this, let's get to sound.
The Sennheiser CX200s have a pretty neutral sound signature. This means that the bass is not too strong and that the mids and highs are also well balanced. I will say however that the bass is still quite present, just nowhere near as noticeable as the previous headphones I've reviewed. This does not mean that the bass is bad. In fact, it is quite clear and sounds really quite good, regardless of its presence. The mids and highs are well represented and are the best among the under $30 headphones I have reviewed. Along with the fact that the bass is not as strong, the mids and highs sound more natural and in place than the other headphones in their class. The sound stage is relatively wide, about as wide as the Panasonic DJS-RP400s even though these are in ears and those are on ears. The only real problem with the sound of these headphones is that they aren't particularly impactful. What I mean by this is that vocals won't pop as much as on other headphones. Everything on these headphones sound somewhat reserved. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it does make listening to music on these headphones a bit less interesting than say my ATH-M50s or JVC HA-RX900s.
Overall though I really like these headphones. On a scale from 1 to 10 I would give them an 8-8.5 maybe a 9 although the part where the sound isn't particularly impactful makes it hard for me to give them a 9. I do however think that these are some really, really good headphones for their low price. I also think that they make a fitting introduction to neutral sounding headphones and nicer headphones in general. After this post I've got two more for December so I hope you stick around for the end of the year. Until next time.
