And...we're back. Well at least I am. For my return to posting we have another issue of Gear Days. For this post, I'll be talking about the Brainwavz B2s.
The Brainwavz B2 headphones, henceforth referred to as the B2s are in ear headphones that you can get for around $125-$140. At this point you might be asking yourself, 'Why would I ever spend over $100 for a pair of earbuds?' Well firstly, if you've read any of my other posts on headphones you'd notice that I make a distinction between in ear headphones and earbuds so get your shit straight. Second, honestly if you like in ear headphones and want a good step up, the B2s are some really nice headphones for the price so now let's get down to the specifics.
As always the first thing I like to talk about is accessories. The B2s comes with a carrying case, a quarter inch adapter and a 2 prong plane adapter. In addition, as they are in ear headphones they come with spare tips. In this category I think the B2s are really nice. In addition to your normal small, medium, and large tips, you get an extra set of each plus a pair of Comply foam tips. These were the first headphones I've tried with foam tips and I've gotta say that they are pretty nice but I'll go more into detail about that later. The packaging for the B2s are also quite nice. For pictures see this link.
Next up as usual is comfort. Like most in ear headphones, fit is important and I place utmost importance on whether I can get a good fit that doesn't feel like the drivers will fall out of my ears. Thankfully, the B2s are quite good in this department and I would rate them as some of the most comfortable in ear headphones I've tried thus far. I'll also remark here that the foam tips are quite comfortable but also I noticed don't isolate sound quite as well as the medium tips for me but take that with a grain of salt as everyone's ears are shaped differently.
If you're like me though, sound is more important than fit or accessories so here we go. The B2s are really clean sounding. There isn't a really large bass response to overwhelm the mids and highs. However the bass response is still quite present. Where the B2s shine is in the mids and highs however, perhaps a bit too much of the latter. Since the sound stage of the B2s is somewhat small, the highs can come across as incredibly harsh, even harsher than my M50s which are already somewhat harsh in certain circumstances. That said, I did notice that by using the foam tips instead of the silicon ones I was able to open up the sound stage a bit and reduce some of the outright harsh brightness that these headphones tend to have. The excess brightness aside, I think that these are some of the crispest
sounding headphones I have. They don't blur the bass, they have really
fast and accurate mids and highs and overall they're quite phenomenal. I do however notice a faint hiss whenever I use the B2s. I'm not sure if that's because they are low impedance at 16 Ohms and the sources I'm using are higher impedance, I'll get back to you on that when I get some new gear.
For a rating I would have to give them an 8 out of 10 overall. That's all I got for this post. Until next time.
